She is not afraid of the soldiers because to her they are simply a part of the landscape, something that had always been there, on every corner, as unimportant as lampposts, throughout her remembered life.
*How would you have felt if you had been Annemarie when the soldiers spoke to her? Why?-
I would have felt very scared and intimidated because they are so big and I am so small and I would be afraid that they would take me away.

Chapter 2
  • Do you think King Christian did the right thing when he surrendered to the
Nazis?Why?
Yes I think that he did the write thing because he saved the lives of some soldiers who were fighting and the Nazis had a lot more soldiers than they did.

  • Would you be willing to die to protect the leader of your country? Why?
  • Yes would be willing to do that because if I did I would also protect the lives of many others because if the leader died than they wouldn't have anyone to watch over them and lead them.
  • What happened to Annemarie's older sister Lise?
  • Annemarie's sister Lise died when Annemarie was a young girl.
  • How has Annemarie's family changed after the death of Lise?
  • It has changed the family because thry lost someone the loved so much and the aren't as happy as they were when Lise was alive.

Chapter 3
  • Annemarie believes that ordinary people like her don't have to be courageous. Do you agree with this idea?
  • No I don't agree with this idea because everybody in sometime in their life must be courageous because you never know what is going to happen next. Like if something happens someday that you had no idea would happen yo might need to be courageous to fix it.
  • What religion do the Rosens practice?
  • The Rosens practice Judaism.
  • Predict what you think will happen next in the story.
  • I think that Annemarie will need to be called on something that takes courage.

Chapter 4
  • What are the answers to the questions that are the titles of the first three chapters?
  • Ch. 1- Annemarie and Ellen were running against each other down the street. Ch. 2- King Christian. Ch. 3- Mrs. Hirsch's store was closed by the Nazis so she was not there.
  • The title of this chapter is "It Will Be a Long Night." Why was it a long night?
  • It is so long because Ellen is staying with Annemarie and her family and the Nazi's might come in and try to find out if she is a Jew and might take her.
  • Why does Ellen spend the night with Annemarie?
  • She spends the night with Annemarie because the Nazi's are out trying to find all of the Jews and Ellen is a Jew and if they find them then they will take them away.

  • Chapter 5

  • 1. Why do the soldiers come to the Johansen’s apartment?
  • The soldiers came to the Johansen's house because they were looking to see if they were hiding the Rosen's Family in their apartment somewhere.
    2. What do you think they expected to find?
  • I think that they expected to find them there because they knew that the Johansen's were the Rosen's neighbors and that they were good friends.
    3. Why does Annemarie tear the necklace from Ellen’s neck?
  • Annemarie tears the neckless from Ellen because the soldiers were looking for Jews and if they saw Ellen wearing a Star of David neckless then they would know that she was a Jew and they would take her away.
    4. When Papa tore the pictures from his photo album, what was he trying to prove?
  • Papa was trying to prove that Ellen was their daughter because the soldiers did not believe that she was because Ellen had brown hair and Annemarie and Kristi had blond hair. So the picture that he tore out was one of Lise when she was a baby and it was a picture of when she had brown hair so it looked like Ellen.
    5. Do you think Annemarie is brave?
  • Yes I do think that Annemarie was brave she did not get scared when the soldiers came into their apartment.
    6. Why does Mama want to travel to Uncle Henrik’s house alone?
  • Mama wants to travel to Uncle Henrik's house alone because if she traveled with Papa then the soldiers would think that something is up and they wold be suspicious.
    7. What are Papa and Uncle Henrik really talking about when they talk about “cigarettes”?
  • They are really talking about Ellen.

  • Chapter 6
  • 1.For what reason is Uncle Henrik’s home a good place to take a Jewish refugee?
  • It is a good place for a Jewish refugee because it is out in the country so the soldiers won't really look out there.
  • 2.Describe how you felt as you read this chapter.
  • I felt bad for Ellen in this chapter because she had to move away from her parents and now from her town to some place she has never been to.
  • 3. Why are Mama and Annemarie frightened when Kirsti decides to talk to the soldiers on the train?
  • They are frightened because they don't know if she is going to say something about Ellen being a Jew.
    4. What do you think the soldiers expected Kirsti to say?
  • I think they excepted her to say something about Jewish people that they knew.

Chapter 7
  • 1. How do Ellen and Annemarie feel as they explore Gilleleje?
  • Ellen and Annemarie feel free because they are away from the soldiers and are out in the country.
    2. Why is this visit different for Annemarie than other times she visited Uncle Henrik?
  • It is different this time for Annemarie because they are hiding someone and everybody is serious.
    3. Describe Uncle Henrik and Mama’s relationship.
  • Their relationship with each other is very close and humerus.


  • Chapter 8
    1. What two statements does Uncle Henrik make that worry or puzzle Annemarie?
  • Her great-aunt Birte died and there was a coffin that was going to stay in their living room. He also says "It will be a good dayf for fishing tomorrow." She doesn't understand why he would say that.
    2. Do you agree with Annemarie that Great-aunt Birte doesn’t exist?
  • Yes I do because Annemarie would probably know if she had a Great-aunt Birte or not.
    1. What do you think Uncle Henrik means by “Tomorrow will be a day for fishing”?
  • I think he means that tomorrow they will need to keep Ellen safe because they soldiers were coming.


  • Chapter 9
    1. Who do you think the ‘mourners” are?
  • I think that the mourners are people that are trying to stay away from the soldiers and also some may be Jews like Ellen and her Parents. They are actually all Jewish refugees.
    2. How does Uncle Hunrik explain to Annemarie why he and Mama lied to her about Great –aunt Birte?
  • He explains to her that they lied to her because they thought it would be better and she would be braver if she didn't know.
    3. Find a line from this chapter that shows Annemarie is maturing.
  • The soldier asked Annemarie, "Who died?" and even though she knew that it was a lie she answered him and said, "My Great-aunt Birte."


  • Chapter 10
    Vocabulary: typhus - a very infectious and deadly disease
    1. What familiar phrase is in the psalm that Peter reads to the “mourners”?
  • "He who numbers the stars one by one" is the familiar phrase because the title of the book is called Number the Stars.
    2. How do you think most of the people at Uncle Henrik’s house felt during the wake?
    3. How does Mama keep the soldier from opening the casket?
  • Mama keeps the soldier from opening the casket by saying that Great-aunt Birte had died of a disease and if he opened it then he might get it.
    4. Reread the psalm and Annemarie’s reaction to the reading of it. What do you think is the significance of the title of this book?
  • I think that the significance of "He who numbers the stars one by on" will be in the book again and we will read and find out what it means and why it is so important.



  • Chapter 11
    1. What is in the casket?
  • There are blankets (clothes) in the casket.
    2. Why did Peter insist upon giving the baby some medicine?
  • He insist upon giving the baby medicine because he didn't want the Nazi soldiers to her the baby crying.
    3. One possible theme for this novel is that it is easier for people to be brave if they do not know everything. Use an incident that happened in this novel to prove this.
    4. Find a section of this chapter that shows Annemarie no longer thinks of herself as the carefree child she once was.
  • Annemarie has become more mature because when the Rosen's and other Jews where leaving on the boat she was brave and stayed quiet because she didn't cry or complain.

  • Chapter 12
    1. Do you think Annemarie will meet any soldiers on the way to Uncle Henrik’s boat?
  • No I don't think she will meet any soldiers because she can run very fast.
  • 2. What observations about waiting does Annemarie make in this chapter?
  • Annemarie's observations about waiting are that it is very difficult waiting for her mom to come back because she doesn't want anything to happen to her.
  • 3. Why does Annemarie worry about her mother’s safety
  • She worries about her mother's safety because if something happened to her than Annemarie wouldn't have anyone to watch over and take care of her and Kristi. She is also concerned that her mother might meet Nazi soldiers and be captured.

  • Chapter 13
    1. Why does Annemarie volunteer to take the packet to Uncle Henrik?
  • She volunteers because she knows that she can run fast down to the boat where Uncle Henrik is.
    2. Why doesn’t Mama tell Annemarie what is in the basket?
  • She doesn't tell her because there may be something in it that she doesn't want Annemarie to know about or there might even be something dangerous in it.

    1. There is a reference to the story of Little Red Riding Hood in this chapter. Which characters from story are like Red Riding Hood and the wolf?
  • Annemarie is like Little Red Riding Hood and the soldiers are like the wolf.
    2. In this chapter we see that Annemarie is confronted with reality and begins to less of a child. What is the reality she confronts?
  • She confronts reality because she has a huge responsibility to deliver something to her Uncle that is so dangerous that it may even get her killed if she gets caught!

  • Chapter 15
    1. What is your reaction to how the soldiers treated Annemarie?
  • My reaction is that I think that they treated her with no respect because they just went through her stuff and through it on the ground and left.
    2. List three times when the German soldiers are rude to Annemarie.
  • They are rude to her when she was running on the streets, they were rude to her when they barged into her house looking for Ellen and her parents, and they were rude to her on the path when she was taking the basket to her Uncle Henrik.
    3. Why does Annemarie act like Kirsti?
  • Annemarie acts like Kristi because she is a little silly girl who is inocent, doesn't know much, and is just taking her uncle his lunch.
    4. Did anything Uncle Henrik tell Annemarie surprise you? What?
  • Yes it did surprise me because I didn't know that when Annemarie took the lunch to him that Ellen, her parents, and the other Jews were under the boat the whole entire time.

  • Chapter 16.
    1. How does Uncle Henrik define “brave” to Annemarie? Based on this definition, is Annnemarie be considered brave?
  • He defines it as not thinking about not think about the dangers but thinking about what you must do.
    2. What secret information does Uncle Henrik share with Annemarie about the Rosens?
  • The secret information is that the Rosens were hiding in a secret compartment underneath his boat the whole time that the soldiers were looking on it.
    3. Describe something funny that happens in this chapter.
  • Something funny is that Uncle Henrik and Mama were making fun of Annemarie because she tried to milk Blossom and she kept on getting angry at Annemarie and it was Annemarie first time milking her. The cat falling into the pail of milk is also funny.

  • Chapter 17
    1. This chapter takes place two years later after the war. How do the Danish people include their Jewish neighbors in the celebration?
  • They include their Jewish neighbors by hanging flags in the windows of where their Jewish neighbors used to live.
    2. How did Peter die? How did Lise really die?
  • Peter died from getting shot after he was captured by the Nazi soldiers because they found out what he was doing. Lise died from getting hit by a car when she was running away from the soldiers so they just followed her a ran her over.
    3. Where does Annemarie hide Ellen’s Star of David necklace?
  • Annemarie hides Ellen's necklace in Lise's trunk with all of Lise's things.
